Which sizes YouTube keeps
YouTube stores several fixed derivatives of every thumbnail, and which ones exist depends on the source image the creator uploaded. `maxresdefault` at 1280×720 is only generated when the upload was at least that large, which is why some videos have it and some do not.
The full ladder is 120×90 (default), 320×180 (mqdefault), 480×360 (hqdefault), 640×480 (sddefault) and 1280×720 (maxresdefault). This tool checks each one and shows you only the sizes that actually exist, rather than handing you a dead link.
What you can and cannot do with a downloaded thumbnail
The thumbnail is the creator's copyrighted work. Downloading one for reference, for a reaction video's B-roll, for a competitive teardown or for a study of what works in your niche is ordinary practice. Republishing it as your own thumbnail is not.
The most useful thing to do with one is study it: look at how much of the frame the face takes, how many words the text uses, and how much contrast there is between the subject and the background. Then make your own.

- How do I download a YouTube thumbnail in HD?
- Paste the video's URL into the box above and pick the 1280×720 maxres option if it is listed. HD is only available when the creator uploaded an image at least that large; if maxres is missing, 640×480 is the largest YouTube holds for that video.
- Does this work for YouTube Shorts?
- Yes. Shorts links are handled the same way. Note that Shorts covers are 9:16, so YouTube's stored derivatives are letterboxed inside the standard 16:9 frames — you will see bars at the sides.
- Is it free, and do I need an account?
- It is free with no account, no watermark and no limit worth mentioning. The images come straight from YouTube's own image CDN.
- Why is there no 1280×720 option for my video?
- YouTube only generates maxresdefault when the uploaded thumbnail was at least 1280×720. Older videos and ones with small custom thumbnails simply have no HD derivative — nothing is being withheld.
- Can I use a downloaded thumbnail on my own video?
- Not as-is. The image is the original creator's copyrighted work. Use it for research, reference or commentary, and generate your own thumbnail for your own video.
